Core Strengthening

  • The core muscles act together to stabilize the spine and protect it from injury during static and dynamic motion.

Clinical Example

  • The core is a group of deep muscles including the transverse abdominals, multifidus (short back extensors), diaphragm and the pelvic floor.
  • A young dancer suffers from chronic low back pain while dancing and at the end of the day.

Treatment

  • Exercises such as the plank to retrain the transverse abdominals and the short back extensors are prescribed.
  • The patient is taught how to integrate the core while dancing to eliminate the pain.
