Dizziness Rehabilitation

  • There are many causes of dizziness but physiotherapy can help those involving the vestibular system located in the inner ear.

Clinical Example

  • Patients will be referred to physiotherapy with dizziness in certain head positions, post whiplash (neck) or head trauma, from labyrinthitis, migraines or from degeneration in the elderly.
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo.
  • It usually appears suddenly and for no apparent reason with patients complaining of dizziness in certain head positions.

Treatment

  • The history of how the dizziness started as well as an assessment of gait, visual ability and certain neck and trunk movements will determine the treatment plan.
  • A personalized exercise program to recruit the body’s natural capacity to compensate will help improve the symptoms and facilitate a return to work and sports.
